Florida DMV pulling man's "ATHEIST" license plate
From the articles: the DMV received 10 complaints about it, so they have contacted the owner to return the plates. He has had them for 16 years.
<a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orl-plate031402.story?coll=orl%2Dhome%2Dheadlines" target="_blank">Gainesville man fighting state over ATHEIST license plate</a> <a href="http://www.sptimes.com/2002/03/14/State/_ATHEIST__plate_raise.shtml" target="_blank">'ATHEIST' plate raises a holy ruckus</a> The Wire is advised. {Edit: Also he has contacted the ACLU. So if 10 Fla. Infidels get together, they can get any religiously themed license plate that any of them see off the road I guess? ... not. Is this is the same state with the "Choose Life" plates?} [ March 14, 2002: Message edited by: Kevin Dorner ]</p> |

I'm impressed that the guy with the ALL4GOD license plate is supporting the man. He realizes that if ATHEIST isn't allowed, then his plates shouldn't be.
Maybe he should try the plate misspelled like "athiest." It's cheaper to have a bumber sticker anyway, but I realize that isn't the point. |

I could see the reason for the objection if the plate said something like this:
(aside from the obvious problem of obscenity) But ATHEIST? Are these fundies so insecure in their beliefs that even seeing the word "atheist" on a license plate on the road offends them? <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[Bang Head]" /> |

All the good ones are taken, at least in Wisconsin

This is an outrage. No reasonable person could find the word "atheist" offensive. The Florida DMV needs to pull its head out of its ass and have it (the head examined.

You know, there are enough boneheads out there that I can understand people sending letters complaining about the license plate.
But the fact that the state listened is scary. Jamie |
