Default VA Schools to display Bill of Rights

From the Winchester Star

Quote:
Last year, it was for God.

This year, it is for country.

In September, both sentiments will probably be side by side in Virginia schools, as a 2002 law mandating the posting of the national motto, “In God We Trust,” was amended to include the Bill of Rights.

The bill to post the signs in public schools was introduced by Del. Robert H. Brink, D-Arlington. It unanimously passed the Virginia General Assembly and was signed by Gov. Mark R. Warner in March, officially becoming law on July 1.

Local school superintendents say they are aware of the new law, and both the Frederick County and Clarke County school boards were expected to approve the measures.

Winchester Schools Superintendent Dennis Kellison said he is awaiting guidelines from the state on the new law before designing a policy for it. He expects the new postings to be in city schools by the beginning of the school year this fall.

Brink did not support the posting of the national motto in public schools, saying he believed “it injected religious beliefs into our classrooms.”

But his bill to post the Bill of Rights was not an attempt to put a secular contribution alongside a religiously inspired one on school walls.

Instead, Brink said, he sponsored the bill because there is no more important document “in terms of civic education.”

“It’s the most fundamental statement of beliefs for our rights as a nation,” Brink said.
I think it's great they are going to display the Bill of Rights. Perhaps with it being displayed beside the IGWT motto, more people will see the conflict. Ah, who am I kidding.

We notice this error and that is why we are trying to correct it. America was founded on religious freedom, not the promotion of any one theological ideal. Are you proposing we take further steps in the wrong direction, simply because we have done so in the past?

I have split this thread to put all of the discussion following Charles Darwin's assertions that CS Separation is contractory into a separate thread. It looks like Vylo was posting as I did it.

I'm afraid you can't just assert that because a lot of Bad Things have happened that CSS is automatically to blame...
