Default H.R. Approves Religious Discrimination in Federally Funded Job Training Programs

From Americans United:

Quote:
Ignoring calls to respect civil liberties, the U.S. House of Representatives today passed a major job-training bill with a provision that would permit employment discrimination based on religious beliefs in federally funded programs.

Voting largely along party lines, the House today voted 220-204 to approve the Workforce Reinvestment and Adult Education Act (H.R. 1261), which includes a provision that would permit religious groups to engage in discriminatory practices when hiring staff even in taxpayer-funded programs.

I guess I'm a bit confused. How can Congress permit religious discrimination in federally funded programs when such legislation will inevitably fail upon strict scrutiny of the suspect class affected?

Don't the representatives have something better to do with their time, like scratching "French Toast" off the cafeteria menus?

So does this go to the Senate next?

I have to believe that there will be cooler (and more level) heads on that side of Capitol Hill.

Thumbs down

Isn't it the House that every couple years tries to pass an amendment that would prohibit flag burning? And it hasn't made it through the Senate yet.

The current bill is even more idiotic (both are unconstitutional). I hope there are more level heads in the Senate for this one, because you know that Bush would sign a law that allows religious discrimintation in a second.
