Chain Letters and Evolutionary Histories
There is an article in the June issue of Scientific American with the above title, analyzing chain letter "phylogenies." I think this would make a wonderful pedagogic tool for explaining phylogenetics, since most people would have an easier time understanding the principles of chain-letter propagation that genetic propagation.

The chain letter analogy is a nice update to the analogy that I learned: medieval monks copying texts. Technology marches on!
