Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Oh God, you're so big." |

I mean really, was the real birth of Jesus some sort of blessedly painless event? SLD (who's witnessed similar events twice - from a safe distance) |

Back when I was in school, they routinely abused us with Christianity. I was in high school from 1968-1972, and we had a student assembly in the guy with nationally known asshole preacher James Robison. He's still on Channel 22 here.
They were very clever - he gave a sermon on "the best friend you'll ever have" without ever mentioning Jesus or God. Made me thoroughly ill. :banghead: |

In high school (Canada) some "motivational speaker" at an assembly requested we "bow [our] heads and think of [our] faith or God." My friend and I made a big show of getting up, walking down the bleachers, and walking across the gym and out one of the doors to the outside (it was sort of awkward and nobody moved to stop us). We got some applause and afterwards quite a few people said it was pretty cool, including a couple of teachers. Some other studentsasked why we did it (they didn't even catch on it was in protest of religion being shoved down our throats) and when it was explained gave us 3:16 lectures and such. By far the coolest people about it were the open atheists (not a tiny segment, though a clear minority), Buddhists, and Sikhs.

Hey VTboy, what's the VT stand for? You going to be a Hokie? Fundies abound in Blacksburg but there is a freethinkers group.
On the christian club preaching during that assembly; I imagine they think they're in the clear because all clubs were given equal time. Any excuse to proselytize. They don't mind circumventing rules as long as it's for a "good cause". |

Hey I feel your pain, I just went threw graduation ceramonies and man they had a prayer before and after the name callings. I was like come on people, we don't need to hear that. I talked to my brother who is 2/3 years older than I, and he said that it was a little much, and a little preachy. I got a little vocal when they had their prayer, voiceing my unapproval but, *shrug* oh well.

I remember having those Power Guys come to my school and do all sorts of bodybuilding things while talking about Jesus. I was laughing my ass off the whole time and I was a Christian then.

Re: Preaching of God during school assembly
VTboy:
Just a tidbit of constructive criticism: If you wish your written works to be taken seriously among thoughtful readers, then please fix your grammer and spelling. Though your thoughts may be profound, bad grammer and spelling tend to label your work a tyro effort. With best wishes, Jacobus Altus |

Uh, I hate to be the one to indicate that you spelled "grammar" incorrectly. Plus "tyro" is a noun. So you can write "the effort of a tyro" or "a tyro's effort" |
