Thumbs up Canadian Politicians Look for God in Government (and probably won't find it)

Yesterday's Globe & Mail had an interesting piece on a gathering of small c conservative Canadian politicians. I goofed and didn't get back to the Globe & Mail website in time to post a link to the article, but I do recall some of the highlights:

According to the latest report by Statistics Canada, the number of nonreligious folks in our country has exploded in the last 10 years, jumping to - if I remember correctly - 27% of the population. Disbelief is highest in British Columbia, with over 55% reporting "nonreligious" as their preference; 33% are nonreligious in the Prairies (my region). I don't remember any of the other regions except Quebec, which has the lowest percentage of infidels, only 7%. But I'll bet a lot of those who did profess a relgion put down "Catholic" from force of habit. Quebec is one of the more liberal provinces, not exactly a fundamentalist hotbed.

Sorry I lost the link to the article; it has some great quotes from right wing loons like Preston Manning admitting that Canadians "don't like the idea of religious politicians," etc. etc. I'm paraphrasing, but it was some great whining.

If anyone can find the story in the Globe archives, I'd be grateful.

Well, during the Alliance leadership race, one of the many, many torpedoes that sunk Stockwell Day's bid for re-election was the published fact that he believed in a 6,000 year-old earth (not to mention his comments about Palestinians being all evil or some such thing).

I lived in central Alberta for 2 years (plus 2 more in Edmonton) and I was perpetually shocked by the conservative attitude there.

Anyway, at least our policies reflect a move away from religion-based decision-making.

Here's a <a href="http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/front/RTGAM/20021009/wreli109/Front/homeBN/breakingnews" target="_blank">link</a> to the article in question.

That sounds wonderful. I may have to move north, before the Dark Ages down here get any darker and I can't find my way out.
