The P-theists: Freethinkers?
Yes, I'm talking about the polytheists, pantheists, and pagans. Not that I'm even sure what those terms mean. Anyway, it seems to me they're some sort of theist, and I wonder why they count as freethinkers in most people eyes. Personally I think the term is bunk to begin with but since most people do use it...
Why are we calling our p-theists freethinkers? It seems to me it's kind of like a 'Oh, you're hated by Abrahamic religions too? You count, then'. Is that the definition of a freethinker these days? One who isn't a member of a faith we atheists find bothersome? I certainly don't think someone like Ojuice is a freethinker (if that term has meaning to begin with) and yet it's almost like people would call him one simply because Roman Polytheism doesn't bother us like Christianity does. Hell, he even gives us atheists our very own gods! Anyway, enough. -B |

Wouldn't it depend on how literally they take their beliefs? If we are to call say Deists (and perhaps even the Xian process theologians) freethinkers, I don't see why a non-literal Pagan and Pantheist should be excluded from the term, especially if they actually examined their own beliefs.
Certain forms of Pantheism (like Sci-Pan) are quite believable and do not even differentiate from atheism. But, on the other hand, those who insist that their gods will become offended if we do not behave or worship a certain way are probably disqualified from the term "freethinker". |
