You mean you wanted the movie to be a sort of postmodern meta-joke where the hero knows he's trapped in a cheesy movie? I don't know, I think that joke would get old pretty fast...even in the early part of the movie where he was pissed off at everyone, I don't think the point was supposed to be that he was all self-aware about being in a B-movie (or else he wouldn't be uttering so many comic book type lines himself!) The movie itself was obviously pretty self-aware, but the character wasn't particularly.
Yeah, pretty much. I think it would have been better than "We can beat them...with SCIENCE!!". For me, the movie got old real quick after he turned into a good guy. Up untill that point it rocked.

Have you seen the earlier Evil Dead movies that Army of Darkness was a sequel to? Army of Darkness is my favorite but the second movie sort of sets the tone for it (and the backstory about the Necronomicon).
No, haven't seen the ealier movies. Maybe that'll put it in perspective and then I can give it some sugar.

Years ago, when I started seeing little "computerized card catalogs" at various libraries, I would, just for the halibut, type in "Necronomicon". You'd be surprised at how many libraries had an entry for it! Necronomicon, by Abdul Alhazred. Translated by someone-or-another. Miskatonic University Press, Arkham, Mass.

Speaking of the library, my friend once found that book(Necronomicon) there and he actually read out the magical enchantments (supposingly) in that book loud. Nothing happened to him except for a few suspicious eyes looking at him.
