What we see in this discussion is the total disconnect between Creationist ideas and the hard, cold observational facts of the world around us.

Hardcore Creationists tend at this point to do several things:

- They go quote-mining to show that there are certain references to cracks being formed under water, evaporites deposited in deep water etc. They may indeed find some such references, but those tend to be about atypical cases that form only a smal fraction of the total observations - in other words they will present the anomalies and ignore the overall volume of supporting data. Also, their quotes will often be tens of years old and be the kind of ideas that have long since fallen by the wayside of mainstream geology.

- Alternatively, they will start to question the possibility of drawing solid inferences from the hard data (right, scigirl?). The word 'bias' will suddenly make a frequent appearance in their replies. When asked why then practically all scientists seem to have this 'bias' the answer will be that 'they don't want to be accountable to God'. Quite why and how drawing conclusions from scientific investigations would be contrary to the will of God is never really explained.

- Also, they tend to go on the attack and ask how evolution can explain the origin of the universe.

- And finally, they disappear altogether, only to pop up somewhere else spouting exactly the same refuted statements all over again.

Isn't the human mind an amazing thing?

YouBetcha, if you really want to surprise us (and yourself?), you should now show some moral fibre and concede that the facts presented by Patrick are incompatible with a global Flood (and please, you must realise that this is only the tip of the iceberg). I'm sure there are others here that can help you overcome your fear that doing this somehow jeopardises the eternal existence of your soul.

Primarily because I've grown tired of only half-understanding your posts, my current reading project is the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences, which makes for fascinating, if slow, reading (I seem to be flipping to the glossary every other sentence). Could you suggest any other good sources for the interested layman? Thanks in advance.
