Patrick / You Betcha Peanut Gallery
Well the Viability of Flood Geology formal debate is up and running, so here's a place to talk about it...

Well... right now, it looks like a theist with a straw shooting as many little paperwads as he can muster, and Patrick with a gatling gun on each shoulder, playfully firing a few hundred armor-piercing rounds here and there.
But that's just one man's perception... |

Personally, i tried to read the debate but after the 1st exchanges took place i decided that i would be wasting my time to persue the entire debate to conclusion.
Sure, this attitude might not be fair in regards to You Betcha but the performance demonstrated on his/her part has been found, on my part, considerably wanting. -theSaint |

You Betcha doesn't seem to understand the issues in the first place. Patrick raises the issue of fossilized mud cracks and evaporites because these things form when bodies of water dry out and occur between sedimentary layers (sometimes stacked on on top of another) that are claimed by creationists to have formed during the flood. No creationist has yet come up with an explanation for how things might have dried out enough during the middle of the flood for these things to form, only to be reburied by that same flood.
The evaporites (great big beds of salt and other marine minerals) are especially damaging to young-earth creationism, since large bodies of water simply don't dry out quickly under any circumstances (the Dead Sea and Great Salt Lake come to mind). And if the atmosphere was saturated with water, as it would have been during such a flood, evaporation would have been minimal if it occurred at all. - Patrick gets a platform to explain a lot of good geology. To me, that alone is worth a place in the Forum (but then, I'm probably biased ) - YouBetcha might be able to dig up some interesting geological counterarguments that may lead to further discussion and insight - not everything in geology is cut and dried, as is the case in all sciences. - My guess, however, is that this is unlikely to happen. What we then might learn is how a creationist abandons some of his beliefs, or alternatively we might see how far a creationist can go in ducking and weaving to maintain his beliefs in the face of decisive evidence for the contrary. We'll see. fG [ January 15, 2002: Message edited by: faded_Glory ]
|

YouBetcha - You're in Dallas, right? Barnes & Noble and such should have Roadside Geology of Texas by Darwin Spearing - or I have a copy. You can see for yourself the stacked evaporites Patrick is talking about in many places near you. Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo has interpretation as part of the drive, but out here north of Abilene I would be happy to show you other examples of gypsum and red siltstone layered up like a tall, maniac Linzertorte. And just east of you, at Grand Saline, are old salt mines with layers of evaporite sea salt hundreds of feet below ground. And then, there's always the dinosaur tracks at Glen Rose...
Go see for yourself! |
