My clothes cover alot more of my body than just the private parts. So, just in case you're serious about this question, I'll have to go with the protection from the elements thing.

It would be interesting to know when and why the idea of modesty began in various cultures.

There exists a few tribal cultures which show no modesty in sparse regions throughout the world. They walk around naked and on occasion wear some tribal gown when the ritual is needed. One such tribe is known as the Zoe and are native to the Amazon.

Metaphorically speaking, they should be able to be that open about who they are, with each other...physically they'd probably be too afraid it would incite undue lust or something.

Although that probably would depend on the congregation....

People notoriously hate to think of themselves as animals. We are shamed by bodily functions and always try to hide them, along with the body parts that designate them (remember in Huxley's Brave New World that the word, "mother", with its primal connotations of bestial birthing, was outlawed?). Culture, of course, promotes this to a greater or lesser degree and individuals within a culture conform to varying degrees, experiencing little to great shame for non-conformity.

Well, why not in the summer when its really hot, why cant we be naked? Why do girls have to cover up at the beach? if its hot, clothes shouldnt matter. I could see your point for the winter, but not the summer.

Well think on it this way for girls at any rate I wouldn't want to be letting my little string blowing in the wind for all to see, as for the girls that use towels what would she stick em to??

There are just certain things that should be kept covered imho plus it's probably safer for most men to keep it hidden as hiding a boner in the nude just couldn't be easy and I know for a fact that if my man took a boner in public at a pretty girl walking by I'd kill him!!!!

Cool

Well let's remember one TINY little problem.....

Do you REALLY want to expose your entire body to the problem of sunburn? Or just the tougher parts?

Why are you of the rather simplistic opinion that one day we all woke up and were wearing Levi's? You're ignoring the socio-cultural evolution of garments. You can still see most of the history of clothing in extant tribes today.

Why would you believe we were naked one day and clothed the next?

Oh, nevermind, I forgot

There's also one. Men in tribal battles exposing their most vulnerable parts?

And many cultures does not have prohibition of women exposing their breasts and buttocks, as far as I know.

If clothes are just needed for protection (against the weather) and not modesty they could be transparent and made out of synthetics....
