Post VMI Cadet Sponsored Prayer Suit

Over a year ago, 2 VMI cadets, with the help of the ACLU, sued VMI to prevent them from having cadet led prayer conducted before meals. I E-Mailed one of the cadets involved, congratulated him for his efforts and asking for an update of the status of the case. He has just informed me that the case is being heard in Lynchburg on December 14th and that a summary judgement is expected shortly.

If you would like to send a message of support, his name is Neil Mellen and his E-Mail address is mellennj@mail.vmi.edu

LYNCHBURG, Va. — A lawyer for the state told a federal judge late last week that Virginia Military Institute's evening dinner prayer is intended for development of military leaders, not for religious indoctrination.

The link to the prior thread is broke, but I'm trying to find it.

Latest developments:

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-VMI-Prayer.html" target="_blank">Judge: Prayer at VMI Unconstitutional</a>

Quote:
In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Norman K. Moon called the ceremonies a "state-sponsored religious exercise."

"Because the prayers are drafted and recited at the direction of the institute's superintendent, the result is that government has become impermissibly entangled with religion," Moon wrote.
