Lightbulb Read Karma Cola!

Read Karma Cola by Gita Meheta. It is about the Europeans and Americans who come to India seeking salvation.

Apparently there are about 20000 Frenchmen alone in India for this. I would say approximately a million Westerners in search of Gurus, minimum.

If half of what the book describes is correct then the West is overflowing with loonies who is contributing to our population explosion!

My favourite bit is this: An american student asked a guru about the destructiveness of nuclear war. The answer was that afterwards all would march towards a post-neuclearholocaust golden world. "The American nodded sagely, grasping for the first time the ethics of nuclear war".

Tonight, as I was half-listening to NPR, someone on some program (ha!) was talking about the effects that the State department's travel advisory had on tourism in India. Several people stated that India was much safer than the U.S. anyway, and nothing should stop us from seeking enlightenment in India! Apparently, they're trying to capitalize more on "spiritual tourism".

Let me search for the link to the program--<a href="http://search.npr.org/cf/cmn/segment_display.cfm?segID=146765" target="_blank">link</a> This should take you to the summary and you can download the full audio.

Karma COla is hilarious, but old now, isn't it? I remember reading it in India in 1989.
