Angry Newspaper Dual

Over the last week or so, there's been at least one letter per day about the "current" debate over Evolution in SC classrooms. All of them have been from fundamentalist creationists talking about how evolution is blasphemy and irreconcilable with the Buybull, etc.

I managed to keep my nose out of it until I saw today's letter:

Quote:
I have been reading with interest this ongoing debate on creationism vs. evolution. I now feel compelled to toss in two cents.

A reader mentioned how we lose rationality when taking the Bible at its word. Apparently the writer uses the buzz-word "fundamentalist" without understanding its meaning. As a fundamentalist Christian, I believe in the fundamental precepts of the Bible: the existence of an Almighty God who created the earth and everything on it, the virgin birth of his son as a savior, and the resurrection of Christ from the dead to save us from a mantle of sin passed down from Adam. I also believe in the infallibility of the Bible.

So why can't evolution co-exist with creationism? Genesis 1:27 says God created man in his own image. Evolution says my ancestors were (in order): slime, amoeba, tadpole, frog and later, ape. Can the two agree? So is God a frog or a monkey?
But Genesis 1:20-25 stated God created each type of animal. Maybe that's why haughty scientists have yet to find a half lizard-half giraffe.

This may not help end the discussion, but maybe it will help someone understand these ignorant Christians. And if we could all be open-minded enough to ask the question: What if I'm wrong? For Christians, that means we lived a morally pure life and urged others to do the same, and we simply end when we die. But what if evolutionists find out at the end they are wrong?
I saw read, and fired off my own letter as follows:

Quote:
In a letter published June 1st, 2003, <soandso> of <somewhere> asked "But what if evolutionists find out at the end they are wrong?"

I propose a question back to Mr. Smith. What if you're both wrong and the Muslims are right? Or what if all three are wrong and the Hindus are right? Is your eternal soul prepared for its forthcoming reincarnation?

The point: There's no good reason to believe in the myths of any group of ignorant bronze-age sheepherders other than "That's how daddy raised me." As a member of the community that looks at evidence and forms a conclusion (rather than the other way around), I'd like to respectfully ask that you keep your set of mythology away from my child's classroom.
I didn't have the patience to address the worthless Creationist lies, but I couldn't restrain myself from beating Pascal over the head with a large verbal mallet.

Yeah, save phrases like that for face-to-face meetings with the JWs who come to your door!

"Ignorant bronze-age sheepherders" LOL!

I say keep this. The amount of flame mail will be good and large. I think people will get a birds eye view of Fundy's.

Well, they called me to validate the letter, and said it'd be published this week.

I should have waited. Since I posted this originally, the letter-a-day pace has managed to keep up, and there were three letters in the paper today spreading more creationist lies. I should be saving them up to refute all in one letter. The trick is doing it in under 250 words.

I keep expecting to see a pro-evolution letter.... there hasn't been one.

Well, that's what I get for living around these moronic backwoods inbreeders.

You must of read this editorial in the Greenville News! I read the same editorial and experienced every single emotion this bag of ions and water could muster up, except for euphorphia. Sadly, I would say that at least 50% of my employees support this guy. I am currently debating 2 creationists with more to follow. I love the line "ignorant bronze-age sheepherders"; being an editorial allows you to state this opinion. Anyway, you are not alone and don't forget that.

I tried writing a letter to the paper, but due to not putting my address on it (by accident), it was never placed in the editorials.

Your missive is one of the best letters to the editor I've seen, sucinct, and yet it makes its point clearly and vividly in a way that anyone can see your logic.

When the flames start rolling in from the "flock", you can remind them that sheep are kept for 2 reasons: fleecing or slaughtering, and you want no part of either.
