Here is a picture advertising this site. Does anyone know who was holding up that sign? Two of them look half-familiar, but that's about it.

I wish I could remember the name of the "unknown" above too. "Unknown", if you read this say hi!

But for the rest of us there, (not pictured} there was:

Clark (BoD of II)
Richard Carrier (BoD if II)

I hung out with jewelc, NialScorva and Gooch's dad.

Dangin is doing the official documantary so while we got to talk to him, he was all over the place filming.

I posted this in another topic yesterday:

"OK well, the croud was respectable. An AA person said 2000 people. I have no way to judge but it seems reasonable. It was not an embarasing turnout liike some feared. It was respectable.

There were maybe 40 godbots on the sidelines with signs thrreatoning us with hell and such. They stayed quiiet most of the time but became obnoxious when chris harper of Landover Baptist spoke. He did a hillarius hell&brimstone sermmon thhat got the godbots mad. Godbot got out a megaphone. But the cops came and stopped him quickly.

Speeches went from 11:30--about 4. Sunnn and breezy but a bit cold.

Infidels had a banner thatsaid "secular web internet infidels <a href="http://www.infidels.org"" target="_blank">www.infidels.org"

We got it hung on the gates in froont of the stage so when c-span does run it, it will be seen pretty well.

Overall a success I think"

A few more comments. I was surprised by the age range. I was expecting a much younger crowd but I'd guess that the average age was over 45. It made for a very good looking bunch of people.

In talking to people from American Atheists, Council for Secular Humanism, etc.. the Secular Web is very well known and respected. Mainly it's known for the resource library and the newswire. I think that some of us who mainly hang out here in the discussion forums sometimes underappreciated the immense resource that the Secular Web side of the website is to a lot of people.

Did anyone ever get a picture of Richard Carrier? I've been wondering what that eminent gentleman looks like. In addition to his wonderful argumentation, he has pointed out to us some excellent historical examples of religious nuttiness:

Alexander of Abonutichus, a classic religious charlatan, complete with hatred of skeptics and "atheists" -- like Epicureans and Xians.

St. Genevieve, who was described as having worked miracles that make Mother Teresa look like a rank beginner.

That's because not many people discuss the contents of our site's library section. I wonder if it might be possible to have our web server(s) list how many people read it. It would be interesting to see what are the most popular articles.

I used my University Lexis-Nexis connection to look around.

I turned up only one article in the printmedia:

Sunday, November 3. Washington Post final edition. Metro Section, C03

Here are a few excerpts:

March of the Godless Takes to the Mall; Nonbelievers Fight Religion in Government

As the nonbelievers marched from the Washington Monument to Fourth Street NW, where they had their rally, they were followed and sometimes heckled by about 60 Christians who carried signs offering competing messages: "Trust Jesus" and "Turn to Jesus or Burn in Hell."
<snip>
Johnson estimated the crowd at 2,000 to 3,000 -- larger than anticipated. "We're flabbergasted," she said. "We're delighted, just delighted."
<snip>
Some in the crowd said they were against religion because of the injuries sometimes done in its name.

"Look at the Crusades. Look at al Qaeda," said Alexandria resident Joshua Hoover, 28. "Every religious organization has a dark history of persecuting and harming those who don't follow what they believe and preach."

<end excerpts>

Ah ha. Here's the link to the Post web site:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A59379-2002Nov2.html

Later all,

Chuck

Edited because I can't spell.
