Default Diocese to Pay $6.5 Million to Resolve Claims

Quote:
But Mark Abramson, a lawyer who represented the 61 plaintiffs, said negotiations with the church, which lasted for about a year, had been rocky. Mr. Abramson said he believed the church had not settled because it was in the best interest of the victims but rather because it had lost a series of court rulings and had its inner workings and history of protecting predatory priests exposed through 9,000 pages of personnel documents that were released in March.

I wonder what "future reserves" means...

And isn't it insane that they close a youth retreat but don't sell any buildings or property. Those mansions are sooo... um... well, camel, needle, eye are words that come to mind. But they should be kept within the church, even if it means closing a youth retreat. Ummm. Or something.

They have a hard time going from their promise to not sell for the settlement, but then when they are dealing with next year's budget they won't sell property for that, either.

While I can agree about the hypocracy of eliminating services while still retaining extraneous physical assets, there is no way I would send my child to a church-sponsored youth retreat if I were still Catholic! Not unless there were armed guards playing chaperone!

Why can't the Pope just hand over a couple of ruby-encrusted goblets or something from the Vatican treasure chest to pay the settlement?

Stingy bastards!

Let's see, 6.5 million divided between 61 = $106557 (plus change)

Then that will be paid over 3 years, so, 106557 by 3 = $35519 a year.

$35500 a year for 3 years is supposed to make up for abuses rendered to a person as a child? I know that is just an average figure that I am using, but this is the value that the church would grudgingly place on each life it ruins?

Boggling.
