Default Neanderthals and culture

The BBC recently produced a TV series called Walking with Cavemen, which detailed human evolution from the time of Australopithecus afarensis. When analysing early modern humans, it was stated that we possessed far greater imagination and innovation than the other known hominid species. I only have an amatuer interest in physical anthropology, but would anybody more versed agree with that conclusion?

Also, I read a long time ago that Neanderthals are believed to have buried their dead. Is there any evidence to support such a theory?

Sure. The most notable one in my opinion is the Old Man of Shanidar.

This article suggests that the Old Man might have been a religious leader; I don't know about that, but at the very least, it shows that the Neanderthals cared for their injured and buried their dead.

Also, Neanderthal man is the same species as modern man (or at least was when I went to college). Homo Sapiens Neandertalensis, and Homo Sapiens Sapiens. (Our subspecies can be loosely translated as "knowing, knowing man".)

If Neanderthals were alive today do you think they would be forcibly assigned to Special Ed classrooms?
