Default America Near Moral Abyss

Maybe this article belongs in another forum, but honestly it's just so damn ridiculous and I laughed so hard, I thought that humor might just be the right place for it-

After reading that you'd get the idea that the gov't is involved in shutting down every church in America, and theists have to worship secretly. Separation of church and state protects all beliefs...christians aren't being hurt by it at all.

Yeah, it's funny, in a sad, shaking your head sort of way...

So it's not the Netherlands or Sweden, but the First World's beacon of fundamentalist benightedness, that has become "the kind of place to which civilized countries used to send missionaries." It seems that the author has put two and two together and gotten i.

This article isn't that bad until the "They were based on faith" sentence, when she started hammering at the link between religion and morality. One can lead to the other of course, but you do not need some belief in an ancient middle-east diety to be a moral person. That seems obvious to most of us in this forum, but not to the vast majority of people in this country. They think the bible is a moral roadmap, which I guess it could be to them. It could also be a book of ancient writings from an ancient people living in a different world than we are. If people use that book and it makes them a better person, then more power to them. Telling us we need that book to be moral is another story.

It's ironic that the author mentions slavery and fails to mention that it was supported by the most pious of Xians. Personally, I think we were closer to the moral abyss when we were burning young women at the stake in Salem. Oh! Wait a minute. Didn't that have something to do with religion also? :banghead:

Default relgion and morality

I too get anoyed with people who make an automatic conection between religion and morality. If anything, the non-religious have to worry even more about personal morality because we don't have a father figure in the sky to tell us what to do and forgive us when we do somthing wrong. It's harder to forgive oneself for violating one's own code when that's all we have than to seek it for violating somone else's code. It's also harder for people to come up with their own reasons for having a moral principle than to have a reason written down before we were born.
The problem is not that we've abandoned religion. There are still far more theists in the US than otherwise. What we really need is to develop a working sense of morality seperate from religion. There are a lot of ways to do this though I'm not sure the humor section is the right place to bring them up.
