Mammalian Diving Reflex
I heard a short interview on NPR today about freediving, which involves folks that descend to underwater depths of several hundred feet with only flippers and a mask. Also related to freediving is apnea diving, wherein participants attempt to hold their breath under water for as long as possible.
According to the interviewee, both activities are related to, and are in fact enhanced by the study of the mammalian diving reflex, allegedly present in all mammals, and especially those that spend a considerable amount of time in the drink. Pretty interesting. Of course this makes perfect sense within evolutionary thinking. I wonder what the "creation science" explanation is, for this ability to manipulate dormant capabilities within the species. [Edited to add: The "interviewee" was Tanya Streeter. Phwoaar!] [ February 01, 2002: Message edited by: hezekiahjones ]
|
