Besides the OT and Aesop's fables, how common was the talking animal in ancient mythology? What's the first record of a talking animal?
According to the good book the first recorded instance occured in the Garden of Eden. But you don't want to get me started on Genesis. I think the talking "ass" is enough. You don't want me coming home intoxicated tonight and exegeting that talking "snake" now do you?

You don't really think God would curse all snakes on the basis of one misbehaving do you? There was something more sinister at work here

You have to read between the lines to find out what really happened

I thought about the talking snake. I was just curious how common talking animals were in older mythologies.

I see the A&E story as an explanation of our awareness of good and evil. Animals don't struggle with morality but we do. The curse of man is not that we "sinned" or "disobeyed". The curse of man is that we know the difference between good and evil it makes us morally accountable for the choices we make.
