Quick Question
Can one of you scholars tell me where the NT passage is that forbids Christians to loan money to each other at interest? It was sort of a widely-used verse until the last century or two....

Luke 6
34 And if ye lend to those from whom ye hope to receive, what thank is it to you? [for] even sinners lend to sinners that they may receive the like. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of [the] Highest; for *he* is good to the unthankful and wicked. best, Peter Kirby |

Ther are plenty in the OT as well:
Exodus 22:25 "If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be like a moneylender; charge him no interest. [ 22:25 Or [ excessive interest ] ] (Whole Chapter: Exodus 22 In context: Exodus 22:24-26) Leviticus 25:36 Do not take interest of any kind [ 25:36 Or [ take excessive interest ] ; similarly in verse 37 ] from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you. (Whole Chapter: Leviticus 25 In context: Leviticus 25:35-37) Leviticus 25:37 You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit. (Whole Chapter: Leviticus 25 In context: Leviticus 25:36-38) |

Just a side note if you did not already know it: disagreements over whether to charge interest was one of the causes for the Reformation in a lot of areas of Europe. The Catholics disdained almost all interest whereas the Protestants allowed it in many cases.

I also love this one : Luke 30 "Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again." Christians do not obey Jesus on this one! I once sent out 100 e-mails to Christians describing my financial woes (the woes were real) and begged for money, any amount. I included Luke 6 of course. I was called the Devil, sick in the head, and an enemy. I couldn't get a single dollar out of these hypocrites! The whole passage is about how to treat the enemy! Money/greed wins over Jesus' directions!
