Post No creation, No evolution?

I am a nontheist, but I find it hard to accept either theory. I see flaws in the evolutionary theory, and I think it has yet to be proven. Of course, I don't want them to teach primitive Mesopotamian creation stories either. But really, does anyone have any other scientific speculations than evolution?

Care to point out any of those flaws?

You can't prove general theories. All you can do is support them. Evolution is doing pretty well in that respect.

Far as I know, there are no theories to explain the diversity and relatedness of life other than evolution. Creationism, of course, not counting as a theory.

I don’t mean this to sound harsh, but how much do you actually know about evolution? Not a lot, from what you say...

Name some. Please. We’re interested. Science, you see, will change in light of the evidence. So show us the flaws. I strongly suspect you’re misguided, but we need a money-mouth interface from you...

Do you think that the thousands of people who work in areas of science that evolution affects -- that’s everything biological, btw -- might not have noticed these flaws by now?

Also note that evolution -- descent with modification -- is a fact, not a ‘theory’. It is random mutation plus natural selection, genetic drift, punctuated equilibrium and all the rest that, taken together, constitute the scientific Theory of evolution, ie the explanation of the fact. Remove the theory, and you’re still left with a fact to explain, a fact based on millions of observations of the natural world.

Nope, but it is vastly well supported, which is all we can expect. <Sigh> You sure you’ve not been reading creationist stuff? Nothing in science is ever proven to an absolute certainty. Because we’re not omniscient, we can’t know all the evidence, so we have to make do with all that there is so far, and any more we can gather. All of it so far says ‘evolution’, but we have to allow that some contrary evidene could in principle turn up. Given all that there is in favour of evolution, it would be a hell of a surprise, and would have to be remarkably compelling, but we have to allow the idea. That’s science.

What, speculations on what else the evidence shows, or hypotheses to explain what it shows?

Cheers, Oolon

Sorry, Anti-Creedance, but there is currently no theory that can compete with the ToE. There is not even a decent hypothesis. And believe me, my friend, the Theory of Evolution is far from a speculation.

May I recommend that you visit this site? It has some of the best info on evolution and Creationism that is available. Be sure to go through their FAQ.

Edited because my keyboard is an idiot.

All luck,
