I have been following the research on omega-3 oils for some time, and I think there is a lot of validity to it. I hope people will not be put off by the commercial tone of that site, or by the apparent attempt to solve all problems with one supplement.

In the midst of reading the book itself I can only state that I find the review listed above to be the most accurate of those I was able to find on the web.

Moving to the Science & Skepticism forum where it is more likely to generate substantive discussion on the health benefits of Omega-3 oils.

Science & Skepticism
General discussions of science, skepticism, and how they relate to one another.

Sorry livius. I couldn't see from the title and description of this area that the post belonged here.

My first in this topic area.

Regards, Chip

Not at all, Chip. It is a bit ambiguously worded, but general discussions of science (such as this thread) do get a lot of air time here. This forum is also very well-frequented by some brilliant scienticists, formally educated and not.

Here is what I think that I know about them:

Omega-3 fatty acids are long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids found in plant and marine food sources. They have been found to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and sudden death (from arrthymias) and provide some therapeutic benefit in certain inflammatory diseases such as rhematoid arthritis. Epidemiological data suggests that they may reduce the risks of certain kinds of cancer and also reduce the risk of stroke and other thrombotic illnesses.

Omega-3 fatty acids may also be efficacious in a number of psychiatric disorders, as some of these disorders have been associated with abnormalities in fatty acid composition. Several lines of evidence suggest that diminished omega-3 fatty acid concentrations are associated with mood disorders and perhaps schizophrenia, but convincing clinical data are not yet available regarding omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of these illness. At least one treatment trial has found postiive results in bipolar disorder. A case has been reported in which a patient with schizophrenia was successfully treated with omega-3 fatty acids, but controlled studies are still lacking. Omega-3 fatty acids may also be helpful in the treatment of dementia and psychiatric disorders of pregnancy.

They appear to be very safe, and the main side effect associated with high doses is the "fishy" smell that they can impart to the person taking them.
