Do you-all think we-here might be a leetle more scrupulous about the casual use of *American*? as a synonym for *citizen/resident( etc of the United States of America"? and as a modifier for that same?
There're a considerable number of Western Hemisphere persons & entities who/which qualify as * Americans* besides us, ya know; & I think careful thinkers like us need to be a little more neat-minded. My Newfy (Canadian). cousins |

When anyone refers to "Americans" they specifically mean "United States of Americans"
![]() Canadians are Canadian, Mexicans are Mexican, Americans are American... The only reason Canadians or Mexicans would get upset would be if people used "North Americans", as there is no "America", just a North or a South. Just what do you call people from the U.S.A. if not Americans? |

I have never really heard anyone use 'American' to mean someone other than a US citizen.
Do people in Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America really refer to themselves as Americans? To say United Stasian or Unitian Statean is really cumbersome. |

![]() The only time I hear 'America' used in broader regard is in my track and field circles. Ironically, 'Americas' is used to refer to all N/S Americans *except* for the US. |
