OtherEvnts (including a singles event) during GdlssMarch wknd & how to find eachother
Come one come all! I hope everyone is buying their airline tickets or
chartering those buses to attend GAMOW (Godless Americans March on Washington DC) http://www.godlessamericans.org Single Atheists (a yahoo group) and Religion-Free Washington DC Zone (another yahoo group) are facilitating an informal Singles event and alternative general events to take place during GAMOW weekend. Most are not NOT official GAMOW events. We are just timing it to coincide while everyone is in town. (Why waste such a great opportunity to meet godless people from all over the country! right?) If you want to be designated as a "godless single" during the whole weekend of GAMOW and non-Gamow events I SUGGEST to please wear a ribbon made with a black ribbon and white ribbon together. For people attending general events that don't want to be wearing the "singles" ribbon you can wear black&Orange ribbons together to let other people know you are one of the "godless". ***Or we will have available Evolving Awareness Ribbons a black and white one for singles and a red and white one for anyone else. They have the DNA double helix on them. Ribbons are not required, however it just will make it easier to find each other at these places that are open to the general public. For those that belong to organizations you can write the initials of those on your ribbon if you want to. (This idea I thought of because each group, especially the internet based ones, ask "how shall we find eachother".) The first event which is informal and open to everyone will be on Halloween. (This is not an official GAMOW event) Look for Me as the Queen in purple velvet and I will have 2 different DNA double helix ribbons on. I will bring ribbons with me. General 'godless' people can wear a orange ribbon with a black ribbon so we can find each other. You can also choose to wear your "single-godless" ribbon of black and white instead. This event is just a suggestion on where to go for a great Halloween party. Oct 31 LuLu's Halloween Party. This is a great DC night club that has several bars and dancing and the coolest costume party and contest. This party is not just for us but one that is open to the general public. There is a cover charge and likely you have to be 21 to enter.I estimate 80% of people will be in costume from past experience. Here are the details: 10/31 444 Promotions' Halloween Night Bash. Lulus, 22nd & M streets, NW. 9pm-close. Features 3 DJs spinning all night, $3 16-oz. Lite drafts and Corona bottles, and $1,000 cash in costume prizes. Info (800) 300-4505 / Directions (202) 861-LULU. -------------------------------------------------- Friday, November 1st The official GAMOW Buffet is sold out. So those that didn't get tickets to it can meet nearby to the hotel where the buffet is at. RFDC is sponsoring an informal and unofficial Coffee Hour and then dinner. This is NOT an official GAMOW event. Attendance is at your own expense and risk. Please RSVP if possible so we can gauge how many to expect. We will begin to gather at COSI Coffee and Bar at 6pm Nov 1st. (Don't worry if you are late because some of us will stay there a few hours to direct people in groups of 10 or so to neighboring restaurants) Xando is located at 2050 Wilson Blvd.; Arlington, VA 22201 This coffee house is only 2 tenths of a mile from the Hotel where most are staying for GAMOW (Hilton Garden Inn). The restaurants we will direct people too will be within 1/4 of a mile from the coffee house. If space is available some people can choose to stay at the coffee house instead of going to a restaurant. They do have food there as well. Each time the group gets up to 10 people or so we will send that group off to an area restaurant hopefully with a local host (if we can find enough local hosts). Thus, you can have a more intimate dinner with small groups and get to know that group of people. Then perhaps hang out with the next day at the march (this will apply to out of towners that don't know anyone). Because we (RFDC & Single Atheists,Agnostics,Humanists) are virtual organizations without memberships or dues we cannot afford to rent out any big locations so these smaller more intimate dinners are a viable alternative. After dinner, feel free to head back to the Cosi coffee house& Bar as it is open until 1am as space is available. First come first serve. If possible RSVP to marylandnaturegirl@yahoo.com ------------------------------- Then of course on Sat Nov 2nd is the GAMOW March 11am-3pm on the National Mall see their website for details. ---- *****After the March will be the ***Singles Event*** that "Single Atheists,Agnostics,Humanists" are sponsoring. It will start out at the same location , the above mentioned COSI Coffee and Bar. It will start around 5:30pm on Nov. 2nd. we will hang out there until around 7pm. (look for the people with the black&white ribbons) Then, everyone is encouraged to go to the "Gamow Social" that AA is sponsoring for all godless at the Hilton Garden Inn lounge (official hotel of the Godless Americans March on Washington - - the Hilton Garden Inn, Arlington Courthouse Plaza. The Hilton is located at 1333 North Courthouse Road, Arlington, Virginia 22201. ) This social event will start at 7pm. You can choose to continue to wear your black and white ribbon if you want other singles to still be able to pick you out from the crowd. After this GAMOW Social event winds down, those that are still up for partying can meet us at Polly Esther's a hot DC dance club with several floors and bars. We encourage the singles to attend this if you still have the energy. Polly Esther's has a $10 cover charge and usually a short line to wait in. It is located on 12th Street between F & G in Washington DC and is about 1-2 blocks from the metro. I think the closest Metro is Metro Center or Gallery place but please call the club phone for confirmation of that. Polly Esther's is open until 3am but keep in mind that the Metro shuts down around 2am on Saturdays . Thus, if you stay past the time the Metro closes you will need to take a taxi home. Polly Esther's 605 12th Street, NW Washington, DC 20005 202-737-1970 This place will be crowded so try to meet up initially in the Polly Esther's named bar area which is the "70's/Disco" area. Please wear your black and white ribbon if possible so we can find eachother. Please email me at cheetahspot@e... to RSVP to any of these informal gatherings so we can gauge how many people to expect. --------- Non singles are welcome to attend the general events. At the events that start out at Xando we will try to have a table sign that says RFDC which stands for Religion Free DC. Feel free to wear the black and white ribbon at any time over the weekend of festivities if you are single. Again, these events are come at your own risk and PLEASE use your head.I'd suggest not to wander off with any strangers even if they are godless. Well that is MY advice anyway. To make ribbons just go to a fabric or craft store and make your own with ribbons and safety pin. Hope to see you there. Updates will be posted on the "SingleAtheists" yahoo group and "Religion-Free DC Zone" on the calendar and if I have the time I will try to come back here with any changes/updates. I apologize for the informality of all this but I am a very busy person lately. My yahoo groups are virtual so we don't have a budget to spend time and money on a formal event. However, these events I hope will be more casual and can be attended spontaneously, although an RSVP will help. Hope to meet many of you. Please spread the word about these events to other godless people that are attending GAMOW or to inspire others to go to GAMOW. If you want to check out in advance some of the restaurants that we will be directing people to go to the below link and then choose "restaurants" http://www.hiltongardeninn.com/en/gi/hotels/locator.jhtml? ctyhocn=DCAARGI If you'd like to see a review of any of these restaurants you may want to check out. http://www.washingtonpost.com or digital city for descriptions and reviews. You may even want to do a "search" on for the restaurants website and see if they have the menu online. P.S. LuLu's & Polly Esther's are both crowded places so wearing the ribbons will be the only feasible way to find each other. The reason we are having some of the get togethers at Xando is to accomodate those that are too young for bars/clubs or that don't like bars/clubs. Summary: 10/31 9pm-Close LuLu's, DC, Halloween Costume Party 11/1 6pm-??? Cosi Coffee&Bar Arlington Those that choose to adjourn in groups to nearby restaurants. Meet back after dinner at Cosi. Cosi Coffee&Bar open until 1am. 11/2 Go to the GAMOW March 11am-3pm 11/2 5:30-7pm Singles mixer Xando Arlington 11/2 7pm-?? You are more than welcome. The irony of it all is that I have been in NYState the last month and will be for a few months.
SO I have been having to try to do most of this from long distance. Thank goodness for the power of ther internet. A couple of my fellow RFDCers (Religion Free DC) that are also a part of WASH (Washington Area Secular Humanists) are helping. Unfortunately, RFDC is the only DC area local group that I know of that endorsed the event. We are also the poorest since we don't require "memberships" or dues etc. But, I think where there is a will there is a way. These events aren't anything too fancy but good enough so that we can find eachother and go to some DC happenings. Hope to see some of you there. Now I just have to decide on a Halloween costume. .......MNG |

****Update on Ribbons**** I am ordering some Darwinday.org "Evolving Awareness ribbons" If they arrive on time we can use the black and white ones for singles and the red and white ones for everyonelse.
I will have these available with me at the Halloween and Xandos events for those that haven't made their own. Any donations to defray the cost of ribbons will be appreciated but certainly not required. To view the ribbon go to: http://www.darwinday.org/evolve/ribbons.html -------------- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singleatheists Also you can check out this new site I found: http://www.atheists.meetup.com It seems they have set it up so that once a month atheists can meet all over the world in their respective cities at local venues. Its new but seems pretty cool. They do it for lots of other topics besides just atheists, but atheists seem to be picking up in numbers. I'll be stuck on the other side of the continent, but "GAMOW" reminds me of physicist George Gamow, whose writings I remember liking from long ago.
I read someowhere that in his childhood, he took a Communion wafer home in his mouth and examined it under a microscope, and that he found that it still looked like bread. |

Sadly, I will be unable to attend. But as I came to II today, I checked out the newswire as I usually do, and found the following link for T-shirts from the NYC Atheists. You can choose your design, they have quite a list to pick from. I personally like the 'Atheist's Prayer' that appears on the site. I hadn't seen this before and really like it! If I could go, I'd be wearing one of these!
