Post Abstinence Only wages war with science

White House Wages Stealth War on Condoms

Quote:
A fact sheet on the effectiveness of condoms in preventing the transmission of the AIDS virus has disappeared from the Centers for Disease Control Web site. According to lawmakers who have protested, the missing sheet was based on public health data showing that "latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in preventing transmission of HIV" and other sexually transmitted diseases. In its place is a notice: "Being revised."

A separate CDC listing of sex-education "Programs that Work," meant to give local officials information on scientifically proven methods of reducing risky teen sexual behavior, also has vanished. The list was created at the request of schools that wanted "credible evidence of effectiveness" as they selected sex-education programs, lawmakers say.

President George W. Bush has begun appointing critics of condoms to a presidential advisory panel on AIDS. . .

i would dearly love to see a missive written by our president describing how exactly we are going to win the 'war' on aids (doesn't it seem like he always needs to be at war with something?) without the use of educational tools and necessities like birth control.

Maybe if his daughter(s) got knocked up by a cocaine dealer for 'services rendered', dubya would see the importance of condom education and, if the woman chooses, abortion.

Thumbs down

Although creationism isn't on the Georgia GOP agenda, abstinance education is. They're hoping to expand the program in the next few years.

No, as is clear from their handling of the arrests of the children of GW and Jeb, the Bushes wouldn't change a thing: there is one set of laws for children of privilege, and a different set of laws for the proletariat.

Speaking of the the prez's war on stuff. Who funds those ridiculous "anti-drug" commericials? There is a new breed of the damn things in which people high on pot kill people through stupidity (One accidental shooting, caused be pot. One running over of a little kid, caused by pot.)

A "stealth war on condoms" conjures up a few curious mental images, and is perhaps a sign that all is not quite sane on Planet Pedantic.

But yes. I fear it may take hundreds of years before these people look at the evidence and suddenly get a chemical connection in their brains which makes them cry "But they won't stop having sex just because we say so!" or "Withholding information about condoms just means they'll have unprotected sex, not no sex!"

Well, thankfully alcohol is legal, or we would have to endure commercials showing car crashes caused by drunk drivers, or kids killed by alcohol poisoning at parties or greek hazing.

Maybe the abstinence people will follow the drug war people and come up with a TV campaign telling us how evil condoms and sex are. "What's your anti-sex?" and "Don't think condoms are dangerous, think again!"

Exactly! Unless they start using saltpeter (sp?) in the water at high schools all across the country.
