I've heard people mention a lot of places, mostly in Europe and Canada, however none of them even compare to the wonderfull life one can live in guilt-free land of Mexico. If you got the money honey you can get away with anything your heart desires. No need to worry about those pesky laws like we have here in the US and else wheres. Show me the money! Yes, welcome to the wonderfull land of sex, drugs and mariachi music. Not to mention you'll find some of the finest senioretas in the world, that'll burn a hole in your crotch for a couple pesos.

I, too, live a hot minute from the Canadian border. I spend a lot of time there - camping, birding, eating dim sum of a Sunday morning. Urban life is great there, too. However, I already live in a pretty secular world. Of course, there's them as says Detroit is another country.

I'd likely go to Japan or Korea. I'm sure I can get a job teaching English in either of those places after I get my M.A. That and they got the anime too!
However, I don't think King George the Poseur will mess things up so much that I'll be dying to leave this country. I'm looking forward to staying here in California. |

Mars. Because I'm about as likely to get there as I am to ever be able to leave my home country.
It's also about the only place where bullies, trolls and governmental jack-asses will ever leave us alone. If they can physically get there, it's only a matter of time before they're crying "Witch! Witch!" |

Here in the Netherlands, in Oudewater, you can be weighed on the old scales and given a certificate that says you aren't a witch. Euromutt has one.
I think I should go get one before I return to the States. It could come in handy! I do hear the certificate printed in Dutch is cooler-looking than the one in English. [ February 12, 2002: Message edited by: Ysabella ]</p> |

Life in Florida is wonderful. I have been to Detroit to work several times and always looked forward to that lane trip back south. It is chilly here today only about 64. But then I live on the coast and there is a slight breeze. We tend to ignore Jeb (I do not think he is quite as stupid as his brother but he is just as pro-big business. There is no state income tax in Florida and our sales tax is only 6%. The state congress just defeated a bill to lower it to 4.5% and remove the deferment that is allowed to a lot of businesses. But Big business said no to this. All things considered it is a great place to live. Call me, I too know a realtor. |

Certainly there is no overt religion here. I am always surprised if I ever see people leaving a church on a Sunday morning - I thought they were just pretty buildings that served no actual function, and were just preserved for posterity! I think that although religious belief here in the UK is declining in a very satisfying manner, we still have problems with people switching to more new-agey beliefs - you know, the astrology and tarot card believers. Ooh, and ghosts are also big here. We are apparently a very haunted nation. I guess people like it so much, they don't want to leave, even when they die You are more likely to meet someone who says that they believe in ghosts than god, and I think this is just a problem in people's critical thinking skills (i.e. they don't). I myself admit to being more credulous as a teenager, but I soon cured myself of that. I have a strong suspicion that most people believe in these kind of things for no other reason than they want to and they think it makes life more interesting (well, a graveyard is so much more interesting if it is a haunted graveyard, don't you think?) I came to Germany after college for a year. Now, almost 14 years later, I'm still here. A generation-Xer who never grew up, I guess. C&S over here is comperable to the US on an absolute level, but different. There are state churches which are heavily subsidized and some silly laws, but politiicians hardly invoke religion. Only a small percentage go to church.
For a bit on my take on Germany, see: <a href="http://www.americanatheist.org/win99-00/T2/blasphemy.html" target="_blank">http://www.americanatheist.org/win99-00/T2/blasphemy.html</a> France is probably among the best countries for C&S issues. Strel |

If I'm going to flee my country, I may as well go to the destination of choice for political exiles, London. Between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. (which covers most of the English speaking world except the U.S.), I've spent time in all of them, I think London is my style.
Jamacia might be a second choice, I had a room mate from there once and he gave it high marks (but also didn't go back when he graduated from college). . . maybe I can try out for the bobsledding team. India, I don't know, I'm probably more likely to die in a nuclear war there than I am in the U.S. More realistically, I would probably move in with my relatives in either Finland or S. Korea. |
