Plastic Wrap leaks toxins?
http://rense.com/general26/plastii.htm
this is a temp link, but i will try to get the info better arranged tomorrow. I am not to happy about the way Jeff Rense organizes his web site, but he gets interesting links. Now I have a very bad and stupid oral habit of chewing on random things (I'm lucky I never picked up smoking) and occasionally I put bits of the plastic wrap in my mouth and I've noticed that it tastes faintly sweet after a few seconds. After this I think "what the fuck am I doing?" and spit it out. I wonder if the sweet taste comes from the chemicals they are talking about in the article. They are called plasticizers, right? IIRC they are used to give the wrap a smoothness and elasticity. But I am wondering about the liability issues that must be lurking in the boardrooms of Glad and Rubbermaid etc... You would think that they would be feverishly trying to find ways to get foodware plastics much more safe for the public. BUT-- the fact that the FDA, which MUST have people who know about this, hasn't officially studied the xenoestrogen and carcinogen leaking makes me a little suspicious and upset. I noticed that she used olive oil for the wrap, for an oil-oil solubility. So I would think that breads and meat wrapped in plastic might not be so bad, especially if not heated. Finally, does anyone know if the massive restaurant service plastic wrap rolls are chemically different from the stuff you get at the supermarket for home use? Because I have noticed the foodservice ones grip so much better than home use ones. [ July 05, 2002: Message edited by: repoman ]
|

Well, I don't know about plastic toxicity, but I do know that Jeff Rense is a bad source for reference.

this looks to be a much better take on the same story from the Associated Press:
http://www.canoe.ca/CNEWSScience0004/28_phenom.html The thing about rense.com is that it cuts the links to hell, but often you just have to go to google with keywords to dog for more complete info. |
