Question John Ralston Saul

I've read a little about Saul and many reviews about Voltaire's Bastards, and I'm curious as to anyone's opinions.

From what I can gather, Saul views Reason as an over-rated, elitist's tool for justifying anything, thus maintaining power by manipulating public opinion. In my opinion, "common sense" tends to be used that way and is deceptively associated with Reason.

From those more familiar with Saul or particularly his book, where does he stand and what is your opinion?
