Post God & the New England Patriots

I was watching one of those xian TV stations the other day (I find them fascinating) and a bunch of Patriots fans were being interviewed. These people travelled down to New Orleans with a Presbyterian church out of Worcester, MA.
They were telling the interviewer how they all prayed for victory over the mighty St. Louis Rams and, lo and behold, a miracle occurred down there in the Big Easy. It just goes to show, they gushed, what the power of prayer can do for you.
It really was quite nauseating.
I was waiting for someone to point out that probably tens of thousands of Rams fans prayed for their boys to win, but I should have known better.
Apparently, St. Louis is just chock full of atheists.

Actually, the St. Louis Rams is considered to be the most religious team in the NFL and they publically show it too. Just ask any football fan on this website how ill Kurt Warner makes them when interviewed after a Ram victory and you'll get an idea how much of a proselytizer he and other Ram players are.

After New England won the Super Bowl, I don't recall one player or coach making one single reference to God, so I was glad they won as that's refreshing these days.

I swear, anyone that "gives God the credit" after winning a sports contest needs to have their head examined. If this god really existed, do they honestly believe he/she would take sides in a sporting match?

Oh man, this is hilarious. Did they miss the Superbowl in 2000 when Warner kept thanking Jesus after winning? Or this year when Anneas Williams was saying he believed God put this team together? I guess those Patriot fans believe that God is a Calvinist and not an Evangelical.

God had a hand in a team from Kennedy-land beating a team from Ashcroft-land? Go God!

Only because the Packers weren't in the game. Even an atheist like me admits that, were God to exist, he would be a Packer Backer.

That reminds me of an old Green Bay joke. After a long life of too much beer and bratwurst, a Packers fan dies of a heart attack. As St.Peter walks him through the Pearly Gates, they see a snowy, glorious Lambeau Field at the bottom of the hill. On the sidelines a man in a coat and black hat paces furiously on the sidelines.

"Is... is that-?" quivers the man.

"No, sorry, that's Jesus. He just thinks he's Lombardi."

Not quite, sadly. From my post here:
<a href="http://iidb.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=44&t=000169" target="_blank">http://iidb.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=44&t=000169</a>

...On a more serious note - I just *loved* (end sarcasm) Kraft's (? the owner) speech at the end of the game - you know, about how "Spirituality, Faith and Democracy are the cornerstones (or whatever) of our nation". Chunder.

WIth regard to sports and prayer, one of the best prayesr I ever heard was that of the Reverend David Shepherd, a cricket player (yes, I know that no-one in the US has heard oc cricket but that is not relevant) who was captain of Sussex.

They had made it into the final after a magnificnet undefeated season, crushing all their opponents.

Before the final, Peter lead his team in prayer.

"Dear Lord,

Please keep the hell out of this game, as the only way we can possibly lose is if you decide to fuck it up for us."

This is not verbatim, but I am assured that he did indeed use the two expletives above in the prayer.

Of course, it could be an urban myth, but it's still pretty amusing.

Yeah, god let six million people get gased and tortured in concentration camps during WWII, but he decided to intervene in the Super Bowl.

Well that would explain why there are so many draws in cricket. Not enough praaaaiiiise Jeeeezus! in the dressing rooms.

(Doesn't explain one day cricket though....)

PS I have a personal vision of Hell. Trying to enjoy a five day Test match while having to explain it to an American

Amen, to that, brother...

(although I should add that under normal circumstances I love Test cricket...)
