Thought I might get more support here than on the BB.
Wow. That thread was started, it seems, with the intent of nothing more than pure character assassination. What an incredibly sad and insecure group of small minded people they have over there.

Is this what they resort to when they have no more non-believers to condemn to hell?

Yes, that's exactly right. And as you know this is only the tip of the iceberg with respect to their advocacy of various government interferences. Complete and utter hypocrites.

Rev. Joshua-

You rock. That is all.

No, actually that's not all. I have more to say. You embody everything a person of faith should be: tolerant, loving, non-judgemental, and dedicated to defending the rights and dignity of others. I admire you so much for having the guts to stand up so firmly for what you believe, without ever being unkind to the gleefully self-righteous hypocrites you associate with. Even with all the insults they hurl at you, you never seem to lose your cool. If all Christians -- nay, all people -- approached life the way you do, what a different planet this would be.

Sorry if I'm going overboard on the gushiness here. I'll shut up now.

Here here!

Rev. Joshua - we may disagree with each other on a number of items about religion, but I can honestly say your one of the best people, theists or otherwise, I've ever met online.

Keep it up, and ignore those BB members.

Allow me to chime in with the rest of the board.

I think they'd have said what they did regardless of whether non-believers are banned from their boards or not.

Check this out (last post on this thread) for quintessential "everyone does believe in God really" comments. So, they still talk about non-believers...

love

That thread was pretty sad, for a variety of reasons.

First, how ill-informed they are about their own past. The slavery comment was simply out of bounds, considering that the Southern Baptist Convention broke with the northern baptists and formed its own convention to support slavery.

Further, the comment about "traditional" baptists was also hilariously wrong. Southern Baptists originally based their faith on four pillars, one of which was separation of church and state. In 1979, as Rev. Josh is aware, the Fundies took over. The current leadership, I understand, follows an anti-Christian belief called Dispensationalism, an authoritarian cult invented in the 19th century in England by a man named Darby, and spread by what is probably the best-selling work in American history, the Scofield Reference Bible. Dispensationalists use bizarre interpretations of the Bible, especially Revelations to argue that the world is going to end real soon -- that's the crowd behind the the headlines in Nat. Enquirer -- "ARE WE LIVING IN END TIMES?" Anyway, the kind of beliefs the anti-Joshua crowd espouses are most emphatically not "traditional" but extremely modern, and date from Scofield's publication in 1906, and the 1967 revision.

Bruce Bawer has an absolutely fascinating book on fundy-ism and dispensationalism in modern american religious and political life called Stealing Jesus that I can't recommend highly enough. Bawer's work comes from deep in his heart, and is erudite, passionate and convincing. It tells some of the story about Darby and Scofield, and reminds us that educated people who post on the Internet do not "get" what goes in in fundie-land.

As long as Rev. Joshua continues to behave with tolerance and intelligence, they'll have plenty of examples to dig up and exclaim over.

And if they want to make public displays of themselves by saying ignorant and intolerant things, they certainly have the right to do so.

Unhappy

Persecution and condemnation in the name of religious beliefs. I thought we were in the 21st century?

*shakes head*

And the BB 'Renaissance' (or perhaps it's a Baptist cleansing?) continues...
