Whether or not it was fictional, Haran, was not central to the original conversation. In this context, It doesn't make a difference if the book was legitimate and lay buried for 600 years or was written by the priesthood in Babylon.

I brought it up to illustrate that the Jews at this particular time had no knowledge of the monotheistic God of Israel, or Moses, and to the best knowledge of the current writers David and Solomon were worshipping other Gods - Ashteroth (ishtar and ba'al) and the Sun.

That much can be garnered from Kings II 23, regardless of the origin of the book they found in the temple ruins (or forged, or whatever).
