Post Virginia's wise gubment

<a href="http://www.newsadvance.com/MGBLZMP9BXC.html" target="_blank">article</a>

A lot of stuff is discussed so I'll hit the highlights of stuff inspired by religion.

A bill to allow the posting of the 10C has cleared committee. How? If posted it will have to be posted alongside other historical documents in order to "secularize" it.
Quote:
Lingamfelter told the committee the new version of his bill was meant to promote "transcendent values" and outline the legal and moral tenets of the American system of government that "made us the most just, the most tolerant (society) in the history of the world.
Last I checked, the 10C is anything but a tolerant dogmaument.

Also currently in committee is a parental consent bill for underage abortion.

Bills aiming to strike down the death penalty were killed.

Probably funnier than the 10C rationalization above is a bill that will restrict discussion of "crimes against nature" in public schools.
Quote:
The bill's sponsor, Del. John Welch, R-Virginia Beach, had originally drafted a bill banning family life (sex education) teachers from discussing anything pertaining to "crimes against nature," including the fact that they're illegal and can lead to transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
Revision of the bill restricts such talk to guidance counselors, sex ed. teachers, and nurses. However, all such speech is forbidden to anyone else.

In case you're wondering, all non-missionary sex is considered a "crime against nature" in Virginia. The article listed oral sex and bestiality[sic] as examples.

I'm all for the promotion of trancendent values. I mean, everyone knows pi = 3.14159... and some students even know e = 2.71828..., but other trancendentals like Fiegenbaum's number and gamma go completely unmentioned in the public schools. And that's just a crying shame.

Don't worry, the industrial lobby will soon be using the crimes against nature provision to ban criticism of corporate polluters in public schools.
