Good point.

I agree, it is great to see atheists speaking up more and more lately. Especially during the reactionary Shrub regime.

Aaaack! There's one element to this story that leaps out at me: the six-year-old daughter. Should she be asked to pray in school or at some other event as a result of this, how many news cameras are going to be on her to assure that she does it, and that her family has properly submitted? If there are no news people watching her, how many teachers, other students, officials and whatnot are going to be looking? What a horrible message of shame to lay on such a young child.

One thing though: any such experience would practically guarantee that we have at least one atheist in the next generation. But what a way to persuade anyone!

I can't believe that the list of cities holding ceremonies including prayer is complete.

It lists Warren OH which is not much bigger than my city.

The local paper organized the event and the mayor will be there. There is a clergyman scheduled to give a prayer.

I would guess that there are innumerable cities around the US that will have public officials participating and prayer.

Hmm. I'm not so sure everything in that piece is 100% accurate. Much of it smacks of propoganda technique. I'll do a little digging this weekend on this, but I believe many of the things he claimed were accomplished were actually never an issue or even existed in the first place. One example being that 'disclaimer' supposedly added to the bottom of the city's page. I saw that page last week, and the disclaimer was there.

Not that I'm opposed to having good secular advocates our there, but what we don't need are dishonest ones who use the same techniques as the fundy coalitions!

Question

I've often wondered why in the UK, which has an official state religion, atheists are respected, well represented in government and suffer no disxrimination of any sort yet in America, with its much vaunted seperation its impossible for an atheist to be elected to head office and atheists are treated with suspicion and contempt.

Any idea?

Because the masses of religious people are drooling intolerant boobs, much like their revered god?

Just a guess.
