Post How many Abrahamic Cults sects and religions are there in the world?

The theists like to tout the peaceful nature of their religions, but the real world shows us that much of the conflict around these days centers on religious differences. 9/11 is a prime example of this. I had a Newsweek magazine that had an article on just how many different Abrahamic sects, cults and denominations there were in the world. If I remember right it was around 33,000 for Christians and several thousand Islamic ones. I wonder how many Jewish sects etc there are.

Last I heard, there were something like 2030 or 2060 recognized Christian sects, just in the U.S. That was from another post on this board, but I can't for the life of me remember what the thread was about. That 33,000 number seems high! Is that Christian and Islamic sects together?

I don't know - but there is a lot of them. Some more compassionate than others - and yet most of them still seem to enjoy a game of "my version's better than your's".

You would think in the days when science allows us to grow babies outside the womb - cure formerly uncurable diseases and invent incredible technilogical toys - religion and all the harm that comes with it would just fade away. Sad thing is - the leaders of our very own country (the only SuperPower left) are up to their elbows in cult-mentality.

How sad.

And how scary for us all, as Bush may solve one problem but create another one that is even worse for us with his God talk. In the Middle East his remark about a crusade against terrorism has millions of Muslims up in arms, and has allowed those like Osama bin Laden to call us crusaders out to conquer the region. His God talk may bring about another holy war that will last a few centuries before it ends. If he would just keep it secular in nature I think it would play better in that part of the world.

Nope, that was just Christian sects, cults and denominations, but it was worldwide. I think there were around 10,000 Islamic sects, cults and denominations worldwide also. I don't remember how many Jewish sects etc there were, but I think it was several hundred, and there are only a few million Jews in the world if memory serves me right.

Maybe someone here will see this and recall the article.

One God, and so many true believers of different faiths. It boggles the mind.

LEAD STORIES
# University of California, Santa Barbara, researcher J. Gordon Melton's new edition of the Encyclopedia of American Religion lists 2,630 denominations in two dozen informal "families" (e.g., 116 Catholic flocks, "hundreds" of Pentecostal flocks), according to a January Associated Press report. Among the least mainstream: the (John F.) Kennedy Worshippers, the Nudist Christian Church of the Blessed Virgin Jesus, the Church of God Anonymous, the Church of the New Song (once offered porterhouse steaks for communion), and 22 that believe in UFOs (including the clone-happy Raelians).
