In the sense that numbers exist, and non-material things like the rules of chess exist, count me as a non-materialist.

Steven Carr:
I think those physical words you are talking about ultimately refer to physical objects and systems... they are physical signals that we associate with memory fragments. It is easy to think that they don't need the physical world to exist.

But anyway, I think this thread is about whether there are atheists who believe in things like souls or that every particle is conscious, etc.

Cool

Upanishads, Jains, Transcendental Idealists, Stoics, some Phenomenologists, in addition to those mentioned above...

I am not a pure materialist, but more of an Idealist/Phenomenologist bent. I think science is an interpretation about the phenomena we observe, and necessarily a subjective affair. The reason science is a meaningful interpretation is its predictive power about our experience.

The concept of "soul" is rather subjective also. What does one mean by "soul"? One would certainly find a Christian and a Buddhist disagreeing with each other about its nature.

I'm atheist, but not materialist. What do I win?

I'm an atheist and not a materialist. Are there medals for second prize or just some sort of force field like magnetism?

I'm agnostic.

Materialism might be right. Or not. The jury is eternally out, and that's all anyone can ever say.

I lean towards materialism, but like some others I wouldn't put myself in the camp yet, so I'll add me in the bunch.
