Talking Funny thing happened at church today.

As I mention occasionally, I'm still a closet atheist which means I go to a Catholic church every Sunday. (I think of it as an anthropological study like Jane Goodall and the apes.)

Anyway, the priest was near the end of his surmon (where he was preaching that we should seriously reevaluate our drug laws!) when some woman interrupted his speech saying that God had told her to come to the church today and say how we are all in some "deep slumber" and that we must be "obedient" to God. She was escorted out by someone who she was apparently with and that was the end of it.

I assume that she was a Jehovah's Witness, or someone who had read one too many Jack Chick tracts, or something of that nature. Interestingly enough, a couple of years ago a priest (in fargo) said that we should do similar things in the middle of Wiccan ceremonies. This was just after the summer solticise and apparently Wiccans did have their ceremony interrupted. (There are alot of wacky fundies in North Dakota.) Christian evangelicalism, don't you love it? Retorical question.

Anyway, I have no real point, but it was something I found funny and I thought I'd share it with you.

When you ask God to do things, it's prayer. When God asks you to do things, its schizophrenia.

Just goes to show what would happen if Jesus really came back with a message for the church. He'd get escorted out, too.

The correct quote is:

If you talk to God, you are praying. If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.

And is properly attributed to Prof. Thomas Szasz.

Hehe. Trouble is that the apes were more interesting than church. Observing church from this perspective is a bit like observing a herd of sheep being watched over by a shepard.

Hehe. I wish something like that would happen in my church. Guess I actually have to go, though. I'm only a closet Atheist around my family, so I only go to church when I'm at home. Some people in Tallahassee are just crazy enough to do something like that, but not in the little town I grew up in. Oh well, I'd rather sleep in than go to church in the hopes that someone would do something like that.

The really unfortunate thing about all this is that these people really believe they are doing us all a favor. They seem to be unable to have a "live and let live" outlook on life because they are convinced that certain people are going to hell and they'll be at fault for not correcting it. Their intentions are good, but damn...why did they have to fall for religion in the first place?

Ugh. Well, thanks for sharing, I think.

Believe it or not, most of the online sites with the quote attribute it to "Fox Mulder".

I'm having a mental image of The Resistance sitting (squatting) on a pew, having his fur groomed and nits picked by a little old Catholic lady...
