I recently got my diploma in the mail, and haven't the faintest idea what I am going to do with it. It's presently stuck in the back of my closet in the manila envelope in which it was mailed, but it's crossed my mind that I should have it framed and hang it up. A fair number of the faculty in my department have theirs displayed (proudly?) on their walls or bookshelves, often times alongside any plaques or certificates they may have won. Others either have chosen to display them elsewhere (home office perhaps?) or not at all. In contrast, it's rare that I step into a doctor or lawyer's office without seeing a neatly framed diploma or two on the walls, so the customs appear to vary depending upon the type of degree (i.e. professional vs. academic).

So where are your diplomas? Do you display all of your diplomas, or is it just certain of them? Why?

My high school and college diplomas are in a box, in the garage, along with a lot of the other plaques and various "atta girls" I've received through the years. I don't feel like displaying them, but I would feel bad if I threw them away.

My diplomas from college, graduate school, and law school are all framed and hanging in my office. My diploma from high school is in one of those boxes that I keep telling myself I'll sort through one of these days. The diplomas from college and afterward represent personal achievements that matter to me and that will matter to clients. The diploma from my high school represents only the "achievement" that my father bought a house in the attendance zone for that high school.

Since I had a habit of leaving town before graduation I don't have my BS diploma but I did pay to receive my master's since it took me so long to get. Where is it? Good question. I've moved so much it's packed away somewhere, I hope.

High school and college diplomas are in boxes here in the basement. I could probably find them in about, oh, I'd say 2 hours.
My license is framed and hanging at work. That's what counts.

My Bachelors in architecture is in its tasteful faux leather folder, sitting on the extreme right of my mantlepiece, behind the picture of the butte in Montana where my Grandparents ashes were scattered. Moving to the left, there is a wood box containing a telescope, then my Rapier takes up the middle, with the handle to the right. Balancing out its curvy hilt, on the opposite side of the mantle piece there is my buddha statue from india (thin, not fat) and my lucky rock, found on the shore of Lake michigan. Then there is a second Montana picture, and my small marble chessboard to balance out the square degree folder.

As for my high school diploma, God only knows, (and since there is no god...im in trouble if ever asked to produce it.)

Associates Degree in Court Reporting -- lost in move from San Antonio to Houston

B.A. -- framed on den wall, $2 standard 8x11 pic frame

Doctor Of Jurisprudence -- framed on den wall, large format, dark green mat, bronze tubular modern frame, looks like you actually accomplished something. Impressive Gold Seal and dean's signature at bottom. The other local school with diplomas that big is Rice University. Cost me over $100 to get it framed nearly 20 years ago.

However, it doesn't have any Latin on it, unfortunately.

The Ph.D. used to be in a box in the attic, but we recently moved, so it's probably in a box in the garage.

A somewhat tangential question:

My diploma says something about it conferring the degree and any rights and priveleges associated with it. What in the hell are those? Do I have a free parking spot somewhere that somebody forgot to tell me about? Or a license to kill, perhaps?
