Default Were you an atheist in combat?

If you were an atheist in combat, you are asked contact Dennis McCafferty at USA weekend,
DMCCAFFE@usaweekend.com

(That's all I know.)

I have yet to see combat, but if anyone does get in touch with that person, can you share what comes of it here? I'm interested to see what it's about. Thanks.

I sent him this:

Dear Dennis,

This appeared on a bulletin board I belong to:

-------------------------

If you were an atheist in combat, you are asked contact Dennis McCafferty at USA weekend,
DMCCAFFE@usaweekend.com

(That's all I know.)

-------------------------

It's pretty vague, so I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for, but I wanted to tell you about my dad. His hame was Rick, and he fought in Viet Nam for 27 months. He was in infantry, and he came home with 2 purple hearts. He was a Roman Catholic when he arrived, but he quickly became an atheist while he was there. He found himself in a situation where he had to kill another teenager that didn't even speak his same language, or be killed himself, and he didn't even know why! He had nothing against this kid, but he had to pull the trigger anyway. It was then that he realized everything he had been taught about a god that loved his creation must have been made-up.

If this is what you are looking for, please feel free to write me back. If not, just ignore it. I can't put you in touch with my dad, he's not with us anymore.

Well, I fit the bill, but a quick look at a Dennis McCafferty home page (may not be him) convinced me not to send an e-mail until I know more about this guy.

Anybody got a clue about his agenda/purpose?

Shit, I should have looked at the web page first. I didn't think of it.

FUCK! Pardon my language again, but now this guy has me crying over my dad. The guy I emailed had better not be the guy from the website, or if he is, he'd better not have anything disrespectful to email back to me. I hope I didn't just dishonor my dad's memory for this a-hole's amusement.

I think this Dennis Mcafferty is a journalist and not the dennismcafferty.com who sings praises to Yahweh. He mainly writes about career changes, NASCAR, and popular music.

He wrote about hate sites on the web here and mentioned Fred Phelps as a hate site.

Thanks for the link, Toto. I started to think about it more, once I calmed down my emotions and started rationalizing a bit. I realized that the email I sent was to USA Weekly, which is a real paper, so if anything bad did happen, I have recourse. I'll be interested to see what happens with my email. I'll keep everyone up to date.
