Exclamation Why do you think any religion sells?

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/tommytroo/" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/tommytroo/</a>

I think the reason religion, especially the 'big three' has much to do with the arguments in the article at the above site.

Any medical people on these boards, feel free to offer your learned professional commentary especially.

We think far too highly of human nature. To quote a mediocre movie. "A person is smart. People are stupid, frightened, dangerous creatures and you know it."

1. We have a tendency to anthromorphize everything. Look at ancient religions that gave each force of nature their own God. Theses gods were presented as very human creatures. Irrational, angry, and willing to smite you a drop of the hat. (A popular religion in he US comes to mind.) People are too intellectually lazy to investigate things, so they say Goddidit. They don't like not knowing the answers, so again they say goddidit.

2. Morals. People feel the need for a moral society, but many don't feel like being incredibly moral themselves. Fortunately, we have a book available that claims to the moral guide for humanity and yet is incredibly vague, the moral equivalent to an inkblot test. You can justify anything with this book, totalitarianism, democracy, feminism, sexism, equality, racism, peace, violence, communism, capitalism. Amazingly enough, people see what they want to see. Go figure! And if you don't like it, people will say "Hey! God says right here that this is what we are to do, or else." No debate, no discussion. God says so and that's the end of it. Hint: People's mental laziness goes toward discussing morals as well as intellect.

If we are honest with ourselves (fat chance!), we'd realize that the morals actually set forward in the Bible are the ones that the powers that be wanted to be in there. "Oh lookee, the Bible says I'm suppose to be your ruler and I get four wives (and bottom bargain prices too!).

I could ask you some questions:

Why do people play the lottery?
Why do people spend hundreds on diets that claim you don't have to watch what you eat or exercise?
Why do people spend more than they earn?

If you can answer those questions, you can answer your own.

"A person is smart; people are dumb, panicky animals and you know it." -- Agent K, Men in Black

I thought that was an awesome movie!
