"Mr Newdow, we're with you on this."
Darwin's Finch's post (see below) on another thread got me thinking about how we might show some sane solidarity on the "under God" pledge issue.
I've no idea whether this court's decision will stand. My hope is that, whether it does or not, we stand together as good citizens, holding fast to constitutional principle and answering the (generally misinformed and emotional) objections to our position, with clarity and integrity. As I see things, this could be a great time to educate Americans about an important (to us!)constitutional issue through mass media, and one important way of doing that is simply by showing that we nontheists exist and desire to participate in American life as fully as theists. Perhaps we can generate a generic letter to the editor or a small ad to be placed in papers or in any media where this discussion is taking place. I'm inexperienced when it comes to grass-roots activism, but I want to be involved somehow. Perhaps this thread can serve as a space for exchanging ideas and organizing some activity. -Wanderer Quote:

I saw Newdow on Hannity and Colmes. Although, you could tell he was exhausted and many a little scared of all the attention, he cleaned up. The "liberal" agreed with him. And the conservative couldn't counter his objections to the "under god" part. I have great respect for that man.

He said on another show that he's received several death threats. I guess that's the Christian "love" we hear so much about.

It would be really nice if we had an address (email or physical) to which we could send notes of encouragement. I wouldn't think posting it here would be a good idea, but does anyone have a contact through which we could forward encouraging words?

I like the idea of putting it in newspapers, too.
Lets make a letter, shall we? I'm not great at it either, but I'll start. "Mr. Newdow, you have done a brave thing, a good thing and a right thing. There are millions of people who are glad that you are who you are and doing what you're doing. I'm one of them." Okay, Corny. Someone else? |

By the way, if we do get an address, may I suggest POST CARDS because he can know immediately that it is about support.
(Although one wonders if CHristian postal workers can keep themselves honest and deliver them all...) |
