Martyrs and Heroes
Don't get me wrong, I'm a very skeptical agnostic, but don't we, as a movement of humanism, want to convey that our beliefs are not cliche? The last thing we want is for this to turn into some weird pseudo-religion. Symbolism is the beginning of that. I see far too many names like "OccamFan142" or "Darwin Grrl" or things like that. And even the fundamentalist opposition is realizing our strong symbolic relationship with Darwin. I personally think the creationist scriptures are total crap, but I'm also not going to blindly accept the theory of evolution until we have absolute scientific evidence of its workings. The last thing we want, in our philosophical and skeptical mindsets, is to turn respected figures into martyrs and saints, or some regurgitated word that people can stereotype us with. Let's try to keep this stuff open-ended.

Phrased like that, you may be waiting for awhile. There absolutley IS scientific evidence of its' workings. The fossil record is a good place to start. The mechanism of evolution may never be known, but because this is not known is poor reason not to accept the 'theory' of evoluton. My apologies if I've misunderstood, but I've never 'blindly' accepted gravity or solar radiation, yet we've lots to discover about them. |
