Question David & Jonathon - Homosexuality & the Bible

So, like, were they an item, or what?

http://www.bridges-across.org/ba/faith/jt_add4.htm

Quote:
There have been several attempts to point to alleged homosexual couples in the Bible, primarily Ruth and Naomi, Daniel and Ashpenaz, and David and Jonathon. The arguments regarding Ruth/Naomi and Daniel/Ashpenaz are far from compelling for me. The arguments regarding David and Jonathon, however, while not quite compelling, leave open the strong possibility that they were involved in an homosexual marriage.
Quote:
In Hebrew culture, similar to many mid-eastern cultures today, men and women did not engage in platonic relationships. They were either married, or they had no relationship. In this case, David compares his relationship with Jonathon to the relationship with a woman, strongly indicating a marriage/sexual relationship. Further, the word used for love here (ahbh; used also in 1 Samuel 18:3 and 1 Samuel 20:17 referring for Jonathon's love for David) is the same word used in Genesis 29:20 for Jacob's love for Rachel, and is used repeatedly in Song of Songs. It is typically translated as love in the context of a marriage or sexual desire (Proverbs 5:19, etc.; see Strong's concordance #0160).

It is based on the evidence above that I have to tentatively conclude that homosexuality is not sin. We are told that "love comes from God" (1 John 4.7). If this is true, and the love between a man and a woman in a long-term, committed relationship is truly love (which we can assume that logically is from God), then why would not the love between a man and a man, or a woman and a woman in a similar relationship not also be from God? I contend that it is from God, and that He blesses homosexual relationships as he does heterosexual relationships

There's a recent thread about gay characters in the OT which touches a bit on this topic.

Heck, just search for mark9950's posts, most have something to do with homosexuality.

Yeah. I don't know how I did it, but she seems to have softened a little bit towards me. It's still the same kind of stuff coming from her, but she has become much less confrontational and bitchy when discussing it with me, for some reason. We'll see....

I read something recently by a guy who supported the idea that Paul was a repressed homosexual.

Makes at least some sense. The guys was a world-class self-loather, describing himself as a terrible sinner, beyond redemption. Throw in his ideas about chastity and his famous misogyny and it starts to seem likely.

Would certainly explain his drive.

Hey, I don't suppose you have a link, or can remember where you read that? I'd love to check it out.

Kia ora, lunachick

You're in luck, i've still got the link:

www.bidstrup.com/bible.htm

It's a long essay, but it's in there somewhere. Should really do some more diggin and see if there's more to back it up.

You've got to admit, it's an interesting idea. Would imagine discussing it with most Christians would lead to a pretty unpleasant conversation, though

Kia Ora!

Thanks for the link.

The conversation could get uncomfortable, but I shall remain calm, and try to do my homework. I will have some back-up with other non-theists and liberal Christians there, so I know I won't have to battle alone in my mission to expose the homophobic lies.

Together we're gonna save the world, godammit!
