Erm... Actually, I believe that squirrel does not have wings. Now even half of it. It has membranes that are used for gliding.

Perhaps half a wing would not be used for flying. Not even propelling. But it could be a good insulation.

I've taken this too serious...

And bats use the same membranes for flying. Half a membrane-wing is for gliding, a whole membrane-wing is for flying. There is an uninterrupted line of hypothetical gradual transitionals linking those two extant forms.

Hello!

I guess my mistake is that I expect all mammals to have wings as in bats. With all five digits in the wing, and squirrel would be pretty far from it.

Nonetheless, bats would almost certainly have once used gliding membranes very similar to flying squirrels. (I have never seen one, so I'm assuming they look like our marsupial gliders):

Squidgy, with half an eye. (Most snail eyes don't work for actual vision, they are simply directional light sensors.)
