Default Which god was samarias god

Hosea 13:16 Samaria shall bear her guilt; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

What gods existed at that time?

What god is the author talking about?

I believe Hosea is referring to Israel's idolatry (see Hosea 4:12). Also, I thought this might be of interest - it's from And Adam Knew Eve: A Dictionary of Sex in the Bible.

Quote:
"I found Israel," says the Hebrew God Yahweh in the book of Hosea, "like grapes in the wilderness" (9:10). But like an unfaithful wife, Israel--whom the prophet Hosea also refers to as Ephraim (a preeminent Israelite tribe) and Samaria (Israel's capital city)--turns to idolatry, "playing the harlot" (4:15), her "lovers" being Baal and the other Canaanite gods (2:13). In their adultery, says Hosea of the Israelites, they are like "an oven heated by the baker," an oven flaming in the morning while the drunken baker sleeps (7:4-6). [More...]

Default This verse

Sounds to me that samarias God was the christian God,Now the question was did the samarians believe in the christian God or was this god even the christian god.

But that cannot be,because wasnt samaria mainly believeing in the gods and not the God.

Or this verse is pertaing to their god not the christian God.

How many gods in the old testament?

The verse is referring to the Canaanite gods and goddesses. The Canaanites practiced Baalism (see baal) which is what Hosea is referring to. As to how many gods, that's kinda hard to say. To quote from this website:

Quote:
Overall, precise identification of Canaanite gods and goddesses is difficult due to the fact that depictions of the deities are scarce, found mainly in the form of votives: small bronze statues and ceramic plaques. Inscriptions and texts concerning Canaanite divinities are still more rare.

Default Do we know

who the original god was?

There has to be in here somewhere that they did not worship the christian God but just a god before the worshipped baal.

I hope you understand what I am getting at.

I think I do, but I need some clarification on what you mean by original god. Do you mean what god did they worship before baal? Or who was first of the Canaanite gods?

Who was this god of samaria?

Since this is assumed to be the christian God(I think),do we know for sure that this was the christian God or just one of the gods.

Baal-peor - a pagan god. (see Hos 9:9-11, Num 25:5, Deu 4:3, Ps 106:27-29). Jezebel (the wife of Ahab) was the one who brought Baal worship to Israel. Baal worship did not please God one little bit (Num 25:3). To quote from 1 Kings:
Quote:
And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria. And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him. -1 Kings 16:31-32
