Thumbs down The Intellects of the Georgia House of Representatives

Check out this passed resolution.

Notice that the "secular" reasons for posting IGWT come after the religious reasons. Have these people ever heard of the Lemon Test?

Didn't anyone learn about history or government?

Stupid frightened idiots. When will they learn that you can't legislate belief in anything.

Not terribly bright, are they ...

Quote:
WHEREAS, the national motto of the United States, "In God We Trust," was adopted in 1956 and is codified at 36 U.S.C. Section 302; and
Versus:

Quote:
WHEREAS, the content of the national motto is as old as the republic itself and has always been an integral part of the First Amendment as the very words of that charter of religious liberty
Is this some sort of bizarre revisionist history going on in Georgia? Last I looked, (a) the nation wasn't founded in 1956, and (b) the words "In God We Trust," nor even simply "God," do not appear *anythere* in the First Amendment nor even the Constitution!

Stupid, yes. But they are the ones in power. So many of them out there, and so many in our governing offices.

It was a national motto before 1956, but I am not sure of the legal status. It was on coins in the 19th century. And in any case, the third paragraph of the "Star Spangled Banner" mentions "in God is our trust" being our "motto". It was written during or shortly after 1812. So whether officially or not, God being part of a national motto is an older idea than we'd like to think.

It is, of course, ridiculous in the extreme to read "in God we trust" into the First Amendment.

Most importantly, regardless of what the Founding Fathers wanted, said or implied, WE, today, the living have to decide what we want. I think God is bunk, so I'm against the motto even if it dates back to when Adam and Eve got off the Mayflower.

This is the best and most accurate explanation I have located to date:

Do you know what has happened since July, 2000, when this resolution was passed? I do volunteer work in a public school in my very conservative little city and I've never seen "In God We Trust" displayed anywhere. Maybe my local board of education is not quite as idiotic as my local politicians.

I think nothing did happen after the 2000 resolution. So they passed another one a few months ago. Both are election years, and I think that they want to use it to win votes. I would also like to point out that this occured in the House. The Senate seems to be a little more immune to religious right propaganda right now.
