Scientifically possible? Yes. Wet manure produces methane..... although depending on how long it was down there the crewman would be more likely to suffocate than be blown up. (Methane is only explosive when it's mixed with oxygen in the right proportions....)

Immediately when I saw this claim, I thought that it was crap. And this brings us to another question - what is the etymology of "crap"? And is it true that the word "crapper" was based on the name of Thomas Crapper, a toilet manufacturer? (Nomen omen, anyone?)
