How can we mobilize the non-religious?
The Christians already have their own political organizations, and the evangelicals (about 20% of the population) have gained an enormous amount of power in the last twenty years. Well, we're about 10 % of the population, and we need to start mobilizing our own constituancy. How can we do it?

There is at least one PAC (Political Action Committee) formed after last year's GAMOW (Godless American's March on Washington). Pooling money to hire lobbyists to influence federal officials is how it is done.
Whether or not you want to support the PAC controlled by American Atheists is something you have to decide on your own. |

I would say the answer to the question is, "Get good at herding cats!"
Although there are undoubtedly stupid non-believers, those who reject belief while surrounded by the sort of society that actively promotes it are likely to be more thoughtful and independent than the average. This means that they don't want anyone telling them what to do or think! |

Proven means
Lower their IQ with cable TV news, keep 'em so busy with work that they become too tired or apathetic to rally for or against anything, distract them with professional sports, give 'em free shit, then go do it all yourself with their full and unquestioning support and voting power.
Hey...its working for the bad guys ya know..... Seriously... legal and judicial positions, effective and overwhelming communications outlets, and money, money, money. Oh, and the backing by the military is THE single most important aspect of mobilization for conquest....er, I mean reform. Look at Rome, if ya didn't have the military behind you, then noone would. And sugar-coat everything expresed in public, tell everyone what they want to hear and practice distraction and disinformation at all opportunities. This shit works for public image. As far as mobilizing fellow free thinkers, the difficulties lie in the "closet". America is one big "small town" mentality and that keeps alot of knowledgable and wise people from taking up the reigns or even risking exposure as the Devil-incarnate. If intimidation(spoken or un-spoken) is removed and legal power is at least made neutral, instaed of favoring the majority, something might happen. |

Come on people, be serious! This is the reason we're losing out to the fundamentalists. If you want to preserve the seperation of church and state we have to stop bitching on these boards about how horrible the fundies are, and actually get out there and do something! So I'll ask you all again, does anyone have any ideas about how we could mobilize our constituency?

You can't. But you can wait for the pendulum to swing in the mood of the country, and you can get the moderate sheep fired up to march, and bitch, and get our rights back for us. Until the pendulum swings the other way and all the sheep in the middle get more conservative again. Social change isn't made at either extreme, it's made in the middle. You want change, make your message focused but moderate and appeal to the middle.
