Default activism

I'm a member of an internet activist group called MoveON (they are very good and large). Today they sent me this. I hope all of you will consider signing (electronically). It is a petition to Bush to let the UN inspections work and not take unwarranted action. This could have a strong effect on our governments' actions regarding Iraq.

Dear MoveOn member,

As you know, next Tuesday, in over 500 congressional offices across
the nation, MoveOn members will meet with their representatives or
key staff and encourage them to join our message to President Bush:
"Let the Inspections Work."

In each meeting, we'll be delivering a copy of everyone's comments
and signatures. We're trying to get to at least 200,000 before the
end of the day Wednesday (tomorrow), when we'll be printing the comment
packages.

Please ask your friends and colleagues to sign the petition at:

http://www.moveon.org/winwithoutwar

Thanks!!

MoveOn is a good organization, but there is no particular church state issue here (unless you think that Bush is trying to start the armaggedon by attacking Babylon), and it is not actually secular activism - I'm sure that religious people of all stripes would be welcome to join.

But I can't think of a better home for it right now. Would you prefer Politics or Miscellaneous? Let me know and I'll transfer it tomorrow.

Does signing online petitions serve any real purpose?

It seems to me that this link actually argues both ways. I further feel that if nothing else, it does alert people to some actual goings-on that they might not have otherwise heard about. I agree, there are plenty of hoaxes out there, but many of these are well-meaning. Also, certain sites that offer petitions also give phone numbers and addresses so that one may contact their elected officials by other than electronic means if they so desire. I've even seen ones that say something to the effect of, "Now that you've signed our e-petition, call or write your rep./senator/mayor etc. to let them know how you feel."

For those of us who are too lazy or too busy to actually place such a call or write a letter, the e-petition gives the feeling that one has actually done something that makes a difference. So, it leads to some peace of mind for these folks. That's a real purpose to me.

This is a good organization (MOVEON) check out the site. We are taking the petitions and meeting with our representatives next WEd. Go to the site and you can ask to attend or help. Better to do something than nothing.!
