Anyone got some creative ideas?
Here's the situation: I'm in a dorm building (in a government univ), and there is a lounge on the 1st floor. The lounge has a bookshelf. On that bookshelf is a king james bible, which I'm assuming was added by a student. What to do? Should I highlight the more ..colorful passages? Bookmark it with an anti-tract? Throw it away when nobody's looking? Put a book about atheism next to it and see what anyone does about that? Be creative! |

Leave the bible - doing anything to it will just create cries of "us poor, persecuted Christians." Put up other holy books, including the Koran (english translation, if you can find one). Also include Russel's "Why I am not a Christian".
If cost is an object, check out used bookstores in the area. If I remember correctly, Maryville is NW MO - Omaha has some good used book stores, though I can't tell which one to go to for a variety of religious books. If you need help locating the used book stores in Omaha, let me know. Simian |

Don't forget a couple of really good George H. Smith numbers, namely "Atheism, Ayn Rand, and Other Heresies", and "Atheism: The Case Against God". "The Born Again Skeptic's Guide To The Bible", by Ruth Hurmence Green is another good choice to tuck right in beside the old KJV. They make good shelfmates. |

Well, freedom of speech means *all* speech, including the KJV.
I like the other suggestions, though. One point, though: If you want to donate a used book, be sure that the book is in excellent condition (no missing pages, staining, etc). Libraries will be more likely to accept those, especially if the book in question is a hardcover. Ever wonder why there aren't that many paperbacks in libaries? That's because hardcovers last MUCH longer than paperbacks ever will. |

I'd take a closer look at it---I'll bet, it being in a dorm, that someone else has beaten you to it. Whatever they did might be amusing.
Then I'd follow one of the "leave other literature" type suggestions. Remember, in a college dorm the KJV may be "innocently" available as a literary reference. What else is on that shelf? |
